ARPANET (an acronym for “Advanced Research Projects Agency NETwork”, in Italian “Agency Network of Advanced Research Projects”), also wrote ARPAnet or ARPANET was a network of computers designed and built in 1969 by DARPA, the agency US Department of Defense responsible for the development of new technologies for military use.

Il primo giorno di gennaio del 1983 ARPANET cambiò ufficialmente il proprio protocollo in Internet Protocol. L'Internet Protocol è un protocollo che utilizza una suite di protocolli di rete sui quali è basato il funzionamento della rete Internet. 

Arpanet fu pensata per scopi militari statunitensi durante la guerra fredda, ma paradossalmente ne nacque uno dei più grandi progetti civili, una rete globale che collega tutta la Terra: INTERNET.

Prima che tutto ciò cominci a diventare una realtà pubblica occorrerà attendere il 1991 quando il governo degli Stata Uniti d'America emana la High performance computing act, la legge con cui per la prima volta viene prevista la possibilità di ampliare, per opera dell'iniziativa privata e con finalità di sfruttamento commerciale, una rete Internet fino a quel momento rete di computer mondiale di proprietà statale e destinata al mondo scientifico. Questo sfruttamento commerciale viene subito messo in atto anche dagli altri Paesi.

Internet (contrazione della locuzione inglese “interconnected networks”, ovvero "reti interconnesse") è una rete mondiale di reti di computer ad accesso pubblico.

L'avvento e la diffusione di Internet e dei suoi servizi hanno rappresentato una vera e propria rivoluzione tecnologica e sociologica dagli inizi degli anni novanta , nonché uno dei motori dello sviluppo economico mondiale nell'ambito dell' Information and Communication Technology (ICT) e oltre.

Nel 2013 Internet rappresenta il maggior mezzo di comunicazione di massa, offrendo all'utente un grandissimo numero di contenuti informativi e servizi.

Grazie alla connessione di alcune centinaia di milioni di computer collegati tra loro con i più svariati mezzi trasmissivi, Internet è anche la più grande rete di computer attualmente esistente, motivo per cui è definita "rete delle reti", "interete", "rete globale" o "la Rete".
